Use of ☽ for Monday, between the sun and moon hands on the calendar dial of this 16th-century clock-calendar.

The 1833 US Nautical Almanac uses the crescent symbols both for the quarter moon phases (top left) and as generic symbols for the moon (right).
Etymology
The lunar crescent is an ancient symbol for the moon.[1] Its orientation varies between encrescent and decrescent.
