Background Information

Released in late 2009, ChromiumOS is the open-source version of ChromeOS primarily designed for running web applications and general web browsing through the open-source web browser Chromium rather than the Google Chrome browser. The distribution is based on Gentoo Linux, and uses the same Portage package manager.

Compiled versions were made available in May 2010 with one of the most popular versions, named "ChromiumOS Flow", which could be booted from a USB stick and introduced several different features that Google engineers had not yet implemented.
